On Friday, October 20, Wurtland Elementary (WES) and Wurtland Middle (WMS) will be participating in a safety simulation in conjunction with the Greenup County Public Safety agency. While the entire simulation will take place between 8am-1pm, the Wurtland schools will only be participating for around 20 minutes. In this simulation, various community agencies will collaborate to increase our community's preparedness for a potential hazardous material incident.
If you see a large number of emergency vehicles at Wurtland Elementary and Middle on Friday morning, please remember that this is for their participation in the simulation.
Again this is only a simulation for the sake of our community's safety and preparedness, and we look forward to contributing.

It's KY Safe Schools Week, and we're thrilled that Judge Executive, Bobby Hall, officially signed a proclamation for it to be the same here in Greenup County!
Our students participate throughout the week by focusing on school safety, preparing for emergencies, being a good digital citizen, and showing kindness!

Extremely exciting news! Mr. Kevin Campbell was recently invited to Capital Hill in Washington, D.C. to speak about virtual reality (VR) being used in GC classrooms! He was invited to speak through “Jobs for the Future”, who sponsored VR technology in GC schools and were impressed with the results!
Policy makers heard Mr. Campbell as he advocated for GC students having the best technology possible in classrooms, “because we want our students to have an edge in taking steps toward their future.” Mr. Campbell explained that VR seems to take away the fear of failure.
“VR allows students to have experiences without being so intimidated. I find that students are more eager to participate in new experiences when using VR, and I was excited to share this on Capital Hill.”

A huge congratulations to these 3 Musketeers, who have earned an all-expense paid educational trip to Puerto Rico courtesy of Upward Bound Math Science!! They earned this opportunity through an essay competition, and expressed immense gratitude to Upward Bound Math-Science, Shawnee State University, and the staff members at GC who have supported their journey!
Many people don't know what Upward Bound is all about. Raini (pictured center) explained that, in short, it provides opportunities to support students in becoming first-generation college students. These GC students will make up 3 of the 8 students from different districts that will go!
All of us here at GC sincerely appreciate the work that they do for our very grateful and deserving students! Thank you to all involved! Please help us congratulate Trey, Raini, and Brandon for earning the opportunity of a lifetime!

Meet Mrs. McBride! She’s a first year teacher here at GC, and the story of how she got here is a great one!
She actually has a business degree and originally had a career in hotel, event, and retail management. Something wasn’t quite right, though.
When Mrs. McBride was a kid, her favorite thing was to “play teacher”. She said that she had a little chalkboard and desks for the imaginary children she was teaching!
Feeling a pull toward education, she took a leap of faith all those years later. For the next 8 years, she subbed and eventually became a teacher’s aid. At that point, she knew she wanted to keep going and become a teacher.
“It was intimidating, because I worked with great teachers,” she said, being nervous to have her own classroom. Seeing her in her classroom today, it’s clear that she was worried over nothing.
“I definitely made the right choice… I’m finally where I need to be,” she concluded with a kind smile.
We couldn’t be happier that you’ve found your “home” teaching here at GC, Mrs. McBride! We can’t wait to see all the wonderful learning that takes place in your classroom!

Another huge move forward in agricultural education in GC! Greenup County Farm Bureau delivered a check to McKell Middle School in support of their developing agriculture classes!
Great learning is taking place at MMS that will develop real-life skills and knowledge. The students expressed how much they love being in agriculture classes, and the teachers are excited for them to see the relationship between agriculture, science, and math! Please help us thank our local Farm Bureau!

We want our GC community to be able to join in fellowship, connected by our common goal of supporting the amazing things happening at Greenup County Schools!
Join us on November 4 for our first ever “Friends of GC” dinner at Greenbo’s Jesse Stuart Lodge, hosted by the GC Alumni Association! We’re celebrating 50 years of Musketeers!
Catfish and herb-roasted chicken will be served along with delicious sides and dessert! There will be live acoustic music and singing courtesy of long time GC teacher and administrator Aaron Collier. There will also be prizes as well as many amazing items up for raffle. The best part is that many are made by GC students!
The price to attend is $50 per plate (tax deductible). A social hour begins at 6:00 with dinner starting at 7:00. All proceeds go to GCAA’s efforts of providing student scholarships and support for staff.
